Major League Baseball has asked Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith to return the $5,000 donation it made to the re-election campaign she has since won, after the political news outlet Popular Information revealed that the league made the contribution to the polarizing politician.

The news incited strong fan backlash as Hyde-Smith had previously been caught on video making offensive comments that have since stoked racial tensions in the state.

I reached out to MLB seeking clarification as to why the donation was made in the first place and was told that the lobbyist who made the contribution was genuinely unaware of Hyde-Smith’s beliefs at the time.

But it’s worth asking, if the league is always going to upset fans on one side of the political aisle, does it makes sense to be making any donations at all?
